Today we've been delighted to welcome our incoming Year 6 students for the first of two Transition Days. We look forward to getting to know them even better in September, and introducing them to all that the Academy has to offer. Thank you all for supporting our efforts to raise standards with Business Dress this week. On Monday we had 88% of students immaculately turned out, and today the figure is up to 97%. We're really proud of our students for how smart they look around the Academy. Subject spotlight: Food & NutritionThis week Years 9 and 10 have been practising their cooking skills by making their own pizzas and chocolate brownies. We have seen, and been lucky enough to sample, some fantastic food that has been made from scratch. As you can see from the pictures, the students took their recipes to the next level by adding a variety of toppings to make their food unique. Well done everyone and we look forward to the next batch of food to try! - Mr Webster Subject spotlight: Wellbeing ActiveIn Wellbeing Active this year, the girls in 10G have demonstrated outstanding attitude and effort in every lesson, regardless of which activity they have been doing. They've taken part in a range of sports which include football, basketball, fitness, badminton, volleyball, dodgeball, rounders, and athletics. The girls have shown maturity, leading activities themselves and encouraging and supporting each other. Mrs M Schwald-Samuel and I would like to thank both classes for making the lessons so enjoyable and for showing an endless amount of enthusiasm. - Mrs Halford Extracurricular spotlight: DofEIn a test of grit, determination and waterproofing, students completed their Duke of Edinburgh's Award expeditions at Cannock Chase last week. Thursday morning started with a circular route around Birches Valley, giving the participants opportunity to familiarise themselves with the terrain and gain confidence in their mapreading skills. After lunch, a number of the participants completed the Go Ape high ropes challenge, testing their confidence as much as their strength. Silver participants had their nerves tested further when their course had to be evacuated due to an approaching thunderstorm and heavy rain. In the afternoon, the resilience of participants was challenged by extraordinarily heavy and unpredicted rainfall, leading to a number of them arriving at the campsite soaked through. However, once they had put up their tents, changed clothes and had a hot meal, spirits were soon lifted. Day 2 brought a reprieve from the torrential rain and participants were able to complete the final leg of the expedition with a feeling of satisfaction that they had got through the challenges thrown at them during the last 24 hours, demonstrating the qualities that the Award aims to develop in young people. Throughout the year, students have also been working on the other sections of the Award, including volunteering, skills, and physical activity. - Mr Burlace Extracurricular spotlight: Year 11 PromLast week's Year 11 Prom was a perfect ending to celebrate students' five years of hard work at Q3 Academy Great Barr. Despite the terrible weather, their spirits were certainly not dampened! Our gentlemen arrived looking smarter than ever and the girls turned up in their stunning dresses. Students spent most of their night as a year group on the dancefloor, dancing the night away. The Best Dressed awards went to Luis Jomok and Gabby Taylor, and the highly acclaimed Prom King and Queen went to Camron Teague and Oliveah Sedgley. Students were invited to come to the stage to celebrate their awards with the year group. The students partied until the end and once again demonstrated how much of a fantastic year group they are. They will be missed greatly by all of us at the Academy. - Mrs M Schwald-Samuel Supporting your child: Parent Consultation DayWe value working in partnership with parents and carers to support our students, both pastorally and academically. The last day of term, Thursday 28th July, is a Parent Consultation Day for Years 7-10 and Year 12. If you have not already done so, please book a video appointment with your child's Personal Tutor. This will be an opportunity to discuss your child's progress and review their Interim Report, which we will send out earlier in the same week. To book your video appointment, please look for our recent email which contains a personalised login link. Upcoming Events
