This week has been an incredible way to end the year! We've had students out on trips to the theatre, Alton Towers, Thorpe Park, Barmouth Beach, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Drayton Manor, and Dudley Zoo. We've also had students making the most of the local Shine a Light Festival, and taking part in activities in the Academy. In this newsletter, we'll focus on some other amazing events of the past few weeks. We hope you'll enjoy reading about everything we've been up to. Tomorrow is our virtual Parent Consultation Day, and then we wish everyone a wonderful summer break. We can't wait to see you all again in September. Subject spotlight: Food & NutritionIn recent weeks we've brought Jamaica to Q3 Academy Great Barr, with students making jerk chicken and coleslaw. They had an absolute blast making this dish; the buzz and smells in the kitchen said it all really! The previous lesson they made fresh cream fruit tarts with puff pastry. All it took was three simple ingredients to create these sweet delightful treats. - Miss Glasgow Subject spotlight: PsychologyAs part of their studies, Year 12 have been looking at hemispheric lateralisation and localisation of function in the brain. In their last Psychology lesson of the year, they created brain caps to put their knowledge of this to the test and create something physical to show these areas of the brain. This was followed by a discussion on the challenges of living with a split brain and evaluating the research into split-brain patients, leading to some interesting points for them to use in extended writing questions. - Miss Morgan Subject spotlight: ArtIn Year 8 Art this term, students have been learning about perspective and how to use it in their own artwork. Students approached this theme with excitement and enthusiasm, and produced some wonderful final pieces demonstrating their understanding. Here we showcase work from Sahibvir, Abbie-Rose, Alexus, Aidan, Alice, Amirah, and Corey. Students have done exceptionally well, learning about size, scale, and proportion, and have challenged themselves to try new things. Well done Year 8! - Miss Jeanneret Extracurricular spotlight: Summer ShowcaseLast Thursday, many of our wonderful students demonstrated their instrumental talent in the annual Summer Showcase. Our budding musicians performed an eclectic gala concert featuring soloists, duets, bands, orchestral instruments, piano features, rock bands, hits from musicals, and more! A massive well done to all involved, especially those who made their Q3 Academy Great Barr debut this concert. A vote of thanks goes out to all staff who came and supported on the night! The students' hard work and the audience's generosity managed to raise £100 for Acorns Hospice. We look forward to returning with more musical events next year. - Mr Sassons Extracurricular spotlight: Sports Day 2022Friday 15th July was the day that Sports Day returned! It was the first full Sports Day to run since before lockdown, and what a day it was. The morning saw students from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 pit themselves against each other, using techniques that they had learned in Wellbeing Active lessons (and some that they hadn't) to be crowned champion in the field events. In the afternoon, the whole Academy descended on the athletics field to see the track athletes contest their individual races, including Sixth Form events. The atmosphere was amazing and all students who competed put in 100% effort. Even the odd tumble was taken in good spirit! Well done to everyone who took part. - Mr Hard Extracurricular spotlight: Year 7 Summer PartyLast Friday, our Year 7s had the perfect end to their first year in the Academy as they put on their best outfits and attended the Year 7 Summer Party. With sweet treats and party games, they danced the night away as we celebrated all of the achievements of this academic year. Students voted for Year 7 comedians and sports personalities and the winners walked away victorious. With enthusiasm, students and staff gave their best efforts during the Cha Cha Slide, and Sweet Caroline echoed around the Performance Theatre. As a Year 7 team we are so proud of our year group and this party was well deserved. We hope the students had a wonderful time. - Miss Bull Upcoming Events
