Last week was Anti-Bullying Week, and an opportunity for us to reiterate our constant message that bullying is never acceptable. Alongside assemblies, tutor group discussions, and other activities, our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors organised a 'positivity event' for all students to share kind messages with one another. Thank you to everyone who donated to BBC Children in Need, raising £134 for this important cause. Read on for news about last week's Sixth Form Open Evening, our first Year 8 Girls Football fixture, an exciting theatre trip, and some amazing work in DT. Anti-Bullying Positivity EventAs part of National Anti-Bullying Week, our anti-bullying ambassadors helped to organise a positivity event. Students came to the Design Centre where they wrote positive messages which then went onto our positivity board for all to see. In exchange for their wonderful messages, students were given a sticker which featured our very own anti-bullying panda mascot. I was really pleased with the turnout for this event and it has been lovely to read all of the kind messages that students wrote to one another. – Miss B Smith Sixth Form Open EveningWe really enjoyed welcoming prospective students and their families to our Sixth Form Open Evening. We have so much to be proud of as a Sixth Form, and it was wonderful to demonstrate how we seek to prepare our students for that next step in their education. We would like to give a huge thanks to all the fantastic students who volunteered their time to support this event. They have been awarded Q-Points to recognise their selfless commitment. Thank you also to all the staff who attended on the evening. We have seen over the past five years an increase of our average grade at A-Level from a D to an A. This has been reflected in the destinations of students, where we have seen an increase in students taking places at high-ranking universities. We are able to support students with work experience and individual advice sessions, which this year assisted students who did not want to go to university in gaining apprenticeships and employment. Sixth Form students have access to a range of support provided by dedicated staff including our academic coach who is based in the study rooms, and their Personal Tutors. Students typically follow 3 A-Levels and also participate in private study and Independent Learning which is set daily in all lessons. Private study is completed on site in our designated study area available at the Academy. Students also have access to our coffee shop during this time. We have high expectations of all students and the minimum entry requirement is a Grade 5 in English Language and Mathematics, in addition to meeting subject-specific requirements. Further information can be found on our website. Our application form for 2022-23 entry to Sixth Form is available online via our website. The application process will close on 31st January 2023. – Miss Benning Year 8 Girls FootballLast Wednesday, the Year 8 Girls played their first match of the year against Ormiston Forge Academy. It was a great experience and we worked really hard as team to try and put into practice all the skills Mr Webster had been showing us in training. Even though we lost the match it was fun and a great opportunity for all of us. We can't wait for our next match. – Lily Murphy (Captain) Noughts and Crosses Theatre TripLast week the Drama department took 25 students to see the critically acclaimed production of Noughts and Crosses at The Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham. This play explores the themes of love, revolution, and what it means to grow up in a divided world. Students were in tears at the heartbreaking ending and had a fantastic experience of live theatre that utilised projection, soundscapes and physical theatre to tackle the thought-provoking issues of prejudice and equality. – Mrs Karim Updates from DT lessonsIt's been a busy term in DT, with some of our Year 7 students learning about 2D design software to support them in creating a functioning torch, and others focusing on textiles, designing and making an Ugly Doll, learning a variety of stitching and appliqué techniques. Year 8 have been using various tools and machines in the workshop, including the pillar drill and the sanding machine; they've developed an understanding of product analysis, CAD software, and different material types to create their personalised Block-Bots. Year 9 have been tackling electronics to enable them to design and make a colour-changing LED lamp; they've further developed their soldering and CAD skills to create some impressive final products. – Mrs Kinsella Stay safe this winterAs the nights draw in and temperatures drop, it's important for everyone to stay safe.
