Our motto at The Mercian Trust is Life to the full in pursuit of what is good, right, and true. Today's newsletter showcases this brilliantly, with Q3 Academy Great Barr students enriching themselves through sport, music, drama, and more. It's been a really positive and busy few weeks, and we're proud to see students engaging so well with their academic and extracurricular pursuits. Battle of the Bands 2023Battle of the Bands has proved to be a hard-fought contest! ![]() Our guest judges Mr Fellows (Q3 Academy Tipton), Ms Sassons (Dorrington Academy), and Mr Davis struggled to choose a winner. ![]() Well done to the 2023 champions The Unnamed, and the Audience Favourite Award was won by Func Band. ![]() Nine bands competed including a band made up by staff. Well done to all our performers and a massive thank you to our audience of over 200 people. ![]() Thank you to all of our staff supporting, especially our MC extrordinaire, Mr Davies! ![]() We look forward to seeing you all at the next gig! – Mr Sassons ![]() What to eggspect when you're eggspectingFor the attachment topic in Psychology, students were given an egg that they were required to name, keep safe, and care for over the week. ![]() Each student had to complete a series of tasks with their egg to show a developing attachment and link to the different theories that we have covered. ![]() A few EGGsamples of the tasks set were: feeding, spending time with friends, meeting the family, and spending the day together. At the end of the week the students had to share their experiences of forming an attachment and sadly say goodbye. – Miss Morgan ![]() Football Fun!In Year 7 football sessions on a Monday there is bags of fun to be had! As Year 7 have started new to the Academy this year, all of the boys who love to play football have had the chance to mix and get to know each other. ![]() On Mondays we have been doing fun tournaments where we mix up the teams every week and give each team a professional football team name to add to the excitement. It has been nice to see all the boys encourage, praise and support each other during their time playing football. – Mr Hennings ![]() Year 12 MasterclassesThe majority of our Year 12 students have taken advantage of the opportunity to book masterclasses which have been taking place on the University of Birmingham campus on Wednesday afternoons. The university has led masterclasses on a whole range of subjects and topics, from Politics to Engineering to Dentistry to Business. Our Year 12 students have taken part in activities, workshops, and lectures which have advanced their understanding of a particular topic, invigorated their interest in the subject area, and motivated them to pursue further study in the field. We are very proud that our Sixth Form students have taken the initiative to engage with interactive insights into what it's like to learn at university. – Miss Benning A-Level Drama Students Inspired by ShakespeareA-Level Drama and Theatre students visited Stratford Upon Avon to see the Royal Shakespeare Company's production of The Tempest. It was an incredible production which reimagined Shakespeare's comedy with an emphasis on environmental issues at the heart of the design of the production. ![]() Year 12 student Farrah commented "It is the first Shakespeare play that I have seen live at the theatre and it was really emotionally moving". Year 12 student Isobelle stated that it was "magical and thought provoking". – Mrs Karim ![]() Practice Moderation for GCSE PE FootballersBefore half term, our Year 11 GCSE PE footballers took part in practical mock moderation for football. ![]() Students demonstrated a range of skills including passing, heading, and shooting, through a series of progressive practices under increasing pressure, then showcased their talents in a competitive match situation. ![]() They were assessed by staff in the PE Department and all marks will be submitted to AQA exam board for external moderation. ![]() The effort and quality of skills shown by all was outstanding. – Mrs Halford ![]() OxWell Student SurveyThe Academy has signed up to take part in the OxWell Student Survey, which aims to understand health and wellbeing in young people and support our students' mental wellbeing. We are asking all parents/carers to carefully read the information about the survey and discuss this with your children. The views of your child would be greatly appreciated in building both a national and Academy-level picture of mental health and wellbeing in young people. Please support your child in understanding the importance of the survey and encourage them to be as detailed and truthful as possible in their responses; the survey is anonymous.
