Learning continues despite snowy setback

It's lovely to share this beautiful photo of the Academy covered in snow last week – a truly magical sight! Unfortunately as you know it was not safe to open in these conditions, despite the best efforts of our Site Team, and we would like to express our gratitude to parents and carers for your understanding and support.

Q3 Academy Great Barr in the snow

Well done to our amazing students for their engagement with online learning during the snow days. We know it can be difficult to stay focused when learning remotely, but we were impressed by the level of dedication and commitment shown by many students. Here's an example of some fantastic maths work that Edie did during a live video lesson.

Business Breakfast and Speed Networking – wow, what an event!

As part of National Careers Week, we held our annual Business Breakfast and Speed Networking session for Year 9, Year 12 and the potential apprentices of Year 13. It was a truly marvellous event; we were thrilled to welcome 36 companies with over 50 professionals from all different sectors. The aim is to support the students with their forthcoming career decisions, opening their eyes to the many different options available.

Bustling event, students networking with future employers

It was a fabulous opportunity for companies to meet students for the first time, making a lasting first impression.

Business Breakfast and Networking

We are building our Alumni Network and were thrilled to welcome a number of former students back to our Speed Networking Event. Pictured in the photos below are Alexander Nash who is a placement trainee at the clinical biochemistry labs at New Cross Hospital (while studying at Aston University), and Naomi Wilson who shared with us many opportunities at the British Academy of Jewellery.

Phenomenal work produced in DT Club

Students have worked on a variety of projects this year. We had one student producing a mechanical toy of a drummer hitting some drums and a cymbal; they are now working on a Vibrobug, which is an electronic project creating a bug that moves.

Light Up Speaker

Prior to the Vibrobug, the students created a speaker that can be plugged into any device to amplify the sound. They had free choice to come up with any design they liked and you can see two of the completed designs in the photos. One student has added a colour-changing LED to enhance her product.

They have explored a variety of photographic techniques, lighting styles, camera craft, and editing methods to produce unique and exciting outcomes.

Year 10 Football vs. Phoenix

Year 10 played a fixture against Phoenix in difficult weather conditions on Wednesday. This was their first fixture in a long time with lots of new faces added to the team. The team battled hard during the game and created lots of chances but unfortunately didn't take advantage of these moments and Phoenix were clinical in their attacks. There's lots of work to do in training with this new group of players but the signs are there that this will be an exciting team moving forwards! – Mr McDowell
