Introducing the Swift Starter Award!

Our latest fortnightly focus is for all students to be Swift Starters, by engaging with lesson activities quickly as soon as they are set. For example, at the start of every lesson we're looking out for wonderful students who start working on the Do Now activity without delay. By praising this positive behaviour, we seek to embed a purposeful atmosphere where learners make the most of lesson time and progress to achieve ambitious goals.

Farewell to Year 13: A Tea Party to Remember

Year 13 students recently attended the Leavers Tea Party, which is our annual event to say goodbye and share memories. The students had an opportunity to come together as a year group and enjoy refreshments with their Sixth Form pastoral team and teaching staff.

Year 13 spent the morning signing shirts and leavers books

The students then joined us for their tea party and were treated to afternoon tea inspired refreshments such as scones, jam, cream, fruits, tea, and coffee. Miss Flash kindly baked 120 cupcakes for Year 13 students to enjoy! To end the event, students were provided with one final heartfelt assembly filled with awards, laughter, and a nostalgic walk down memory lane through photographs of their time at the Academy.

GCSE PE Students Shine in Practical Moderation

External GCSE Physical Education assessments started on Tuesday 9th May, when students completed their practical moderation. A moderator from the AQA exam board visited the Academy to observe the quality of skills and decision-making in three different sports. The morning session began with selected students performing a variety of skills and techniques in badminton.

This was then followed by students performing in handball. This session included progressive drills focusing on skills, followed by a full 7-a-side game.

After lunch a small group of students braved the thunder and lightning, to participate in a football skills session before being joined on the field to compete in a full 11-a-side match. Current A-Level students and Year 10 GCSE students made up the numbers to provide challenge and also to gain experience of a moderation process.

Shooting for the Stars – Girls Football

The Year 8 Girls Football squad has been happy to welcome plenty of new players to our training sessions from Year 9 over recent weeks. It's fantastic to see the growing interest in girls' football reflected in our students' enthusiasm and participation.

Pre-match team talk

Training takes place on a Wednesday from 3:15-4:15pm and all female students in Years 8 and 9 are welcome to join us regardless of experience or ability. Sessions include basic skills such as dribbling and shooting, and end with a match to put those newly acquired skills into practice.

We look forward to playing in upcoming fixtures and tournaments and it is a pleasure to help the girls develop their skills and love of the game. Keep it up, girls! – Mr Webster

Year 8 Boys Football Team Fights for Cup Final Spot

Last week the Year 8 Boys Football Team travelled to Wood Green Academy to play in the Sandwell Cup Tournament, in which the winners would progress to the Cup Final. All of the players played with skill and determination and despite comfortably beating a strong Phoenix side, the team narrowly lost to eventual winners, Wood Green Academy, 2-1. Unfortunately this means they were unable to secure a place in the final. The top goal scorer for Q3 Academy Great Barr was Ethan Downes. – Mr Hard

Knitting and Crochet Club

Every week on a Tuesday, students get together at Knitting and Crochet Club for a knit and natter. At the club we support each other in learning and developing the skills of knitting, crocheting, and cross stitch. During the year, students have been working on a range of projects including crochet blankets, decorations, and cross stitch book marks. From beginners to experts, everyone is welcome.

Student working on a latch hook cushion project

In the last term, Miss Flash has joined us and she has got us all 'hooked' on making latch rugs and cushions. Latch hooking is where students use a specially designed latch hook to knot short segments of wool to a canvas grid.

During the summer term, students are working on designing and making their own cushions using a combination of the latch and knitting skills they have developed.
