This week we check in with the English and Religious Studies departments, and we see what has been happening in Choir and Visual Arts extra-curricular clubs. With Christmas fast approaching, we share some exciting news about the upcoming Christmas pantomime! Finally please read the important information about end of term arrangements. Staff Prepared to Dazzle in Christmas Fundraising ProductionOn Wednesday 13th December at 3:30pm in the Performance Theatre, something amazing is taking place! A cast of over 20 members of Q3 Academy Great Barr staff have been rehearsing and preparing for their festive take on 'The Nativity'. However, this isn't your usual nativity tale, imagine your teachers becoming 6 year olds to tell the story! ![]() The performance promises to be both hilarious and festive and it is all in aid of Mr Richardson's fundraising campaign for Birmingham Mind in memory of his father, who he tragically lost last year. Earlier on in the year, a team of staff cycled 135 miles over two days from the Academy to Weston-Super-Mare and almost £10,000 was raised. The performance aims to add to this impressive total. This performance is for students of the Academy and tickets will be limited and allocated on a first come, first served basis. Tickets will soon be available to purchase via ParentPay at a cost of £3 each. The performance is approximately 30 minutes in length. Each week we will reveal some of our amazing cast, this week I would like to introduce you to the three Shepherds: Mr Richardson, Mr Hard, and Mr McGeough. – Mrs Karim Choir ClubWe are thrilled to share with you the latest achievements and upcoming events featuring our talented vocal ensemble. Led by Mrs Baines and Ms Anderson, our new Ethos Leader, our choir has grown not only in number but also in the quality of their performances. The choir, which comprises students from Year 7 to Year 11, has been practising diligently every Wednesday, perfecting a repertoire including Musical Theatre, Gospel, and Pop. ![]() With the festive season just around the corner, we have been working on some Christmas classics in preparation for our upcoming carol concert at St Margaret's Church on the 14th December at 7pm which promises to be a highlight of the Academy calendar. We extend an open invitation to all parents and carers to join us for this special occasion. It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the hard work of our students and to enjoy an evening of heart-warming music. Tickets are available now on ParentPay. The choir is always looking for new voices to add to our wonderful ensemble. No audition is required, just a love for singing and a commitment to attend rehearsals. Interested students are encouraged to speak to Mrs Baines for more details. – R Baines Year 7 Explore How Jaffa Cakes Represent the Holy TrinityThis week in Year 7, RS students have been analysing, explaining and enjoying Jaffa Cakes, making links between how a Jaffa cake represents the key Christian belief of the Holy Trinity. ![]() The Holy Trinity is a key Christian belief which states the Christian God is considered to be three separate things: God the Father, God the Son, and the Holy Spirit. However, all three things make up God. Students made the link this is like a Jaffa Cake, a Jaffa Cake is three separate things but would not be the same without one element. ![]() Year 7 have started their new learning topic, a critical analysis of Christianity and its place in UK society. – Ms Colley ![]() Exploring the Wild through Words: Year 7's Nature Poetry UnitYear 7 students have embarked on their nature poetry unit, during which they will delve into the works of esteemed poets such as Seamus Heaney and investigate the portrayal of the natural world within their works. ![]() Each student embarked on a personal journey, crafting verses that mirrored the green tapestry of their own backyards. We hosted a poetry showcase during which students delighted in sharing their original verses with one another. ![]() Presenting the two winners for the most creative and visually outstanding poems. – Miss Russell ![]() Year 9 Students Bring the Forest to Life with Mixed Media MasterpiecesOur talented Year 9 students have been working hard creating enchanting mixed media woodland scenes. They have delved into the heart of the forest, through the intricate layering of materials and techniques. With a focus on composition and layout, they have been meticulously crafting pieces that not only showcase their technical skills but also their ability to capture the essence of the natural world. ![]() The project has been an ambitious one, requiring the students to apply their growing knowledge of art in innovative ways. They've experimented with a variety of materials, from traditional paints, printmaking and oil pastel work, combining them to form rich, tactile landscapes that invite the viewer to step into a different realm. ![]() As they've worked, the classroom has been abuzz with enthusiasm and the kind of focused energy that comes from deep engagement with creative work. It's been inspiring to see each student approach the task with their unique perspective, resulting in a diverse array of woodland scenes that share a common thread of quality and imagination. – Miss Jeanneret ![]() Exploring Future Opportunities: Post-16 Pathways Event a Hit!Students embraced the opportunity to speak with visiting Post-16 providers when we welcomed Walsall College, Nova Training, and Sandwell College to the Academy last week, alongside our very own Sixth Form. It was lovely to see and hear the students as they overcame their nerves when approaching the providers and asking some excellent questions. ![]() Students were able to learn about information specific to the many courses on offer. – Mrs Meredith ![]() M. Zog enjoyed learning all about French culture! – Mr Mills ![]() Christmas Jumper Day 2023The Academy will be taking part in our annual Christmas Jumper Day tradition on the slightly later date of Friday 15th December as to coincide with our end of term. Students will finish at the earlier time of 12:30pm on this day. We appreciate that money is tight for most families right now, so we won't be requesting a minimum donation towards Christmas Jumper Day this year. Instead, if you are able to spare a little change, there is a list of charities below who would gladly welcome your donation.
