We're nearly there!

This week, we drop into Geography to see what our Year 7 students have been up to, we hear about our Year 9 students' first basketball game, and we get some more pantomime reveals! Also, we share another careers opportunity our Sixth Form students have had and finally, we see who our ZAFTA winner is!

With one more week to go, we encourage our students to keep working hard, remain engaged, and continue to follow the Academy expectations as we all get ready for a much needed rest!

Navigating New Knowledge: Year 7 Geographers' Global Journey

Our Year 7 Geographers started the year by exploring the physical, human, and cultural characteristics of a range of places around our world. We started with features in Sandwell, then the UK, before spanning out to explore the amazing continents and oceans of our world. But how can we navigate to these amazing places we have explored? How can we navigate to Scotland to sample their famous Irn-Bru, or to the coldest continent to see the penguins? A compass!

Children gluing and sticking a compass

As budding explorers, our students learn the art of navigation, ensuring they can always find their way – no GPS required! Our Year 7 geographers have discovered that the trusty compass is their best ally in the quest to unravel the mysteries of our planet's landscapes. So they crafted their very own compasses, tapping into the ancient art of navigation.

Students cutting and sticking

We explored how to use cardinal points (North, South, East, and West) and intercardinal points (NE, NW, SE, SW) to give accurate directions to navigate to a given place. Using our compasses and a world map, we identified the directions we travel in to get from the UK to other destinations around the world.

Our next adventure takes us into the realm of secondary cardinal points (referring to the directions halfway between the cardinal points e.g., NNE, ENE, SSE, etc.), where precision meets discovery, as we fine-tune our navigational skills for an even deeper exploration of our planet's wonders. We hope you will join us on our next global adventure! – Miss Perkins
