This week we visit our Maths and English departments, we check in with Year 7/8 Girls Football team and we take a look at the opportunities available through CCF. For the full list of criteria and to apply now, see the Sandwell website. Storming our way through EnglishYear 7 students have been studying Shakespeare's play 'The Tempest'. So far, we have explored contextual information, the plot and characters. ![]() This week, we looked specifically at the character Caliban and one of his soliloquys. We delved into how he was treated by those around him and debated whether he was a victim or a villain. – Miss Russell ![]() Tackling the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge: A Brain-Teasing AdventureLast week, some of our students completed the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge. This is a national challenge designed to get students thinking logically and practically about mathematics. ![]() Students needed not only logic but also significant mathematical knowledge for the challenge. Students had access to practice papers before the event so they could try to prepare. ![]() Every participating student earns a certificate of participation, and, depending on their success, they can achieve bronze, silver, or gold certificates. There will also be a best in year and best in the Academy awards. We're rooting for all our brilliant mathematicians taking on the challenge as we await the results. – Mr Machin ![]() Spotlight on Our Rising Stars: The Y7 and Y8 Girls' Football TeamThe Year 7 and 8 girls have been working hard this year and have been training every Friday to improve their skills. Their hard work has really paid off as has their ability to play together as a team. They have competed in tournaments against other establishments across the West Midlands where they demonstrated their skills and teamwork. They have shown that they are a great team and have lots of potential. Keep up the fantastic work girls! – Miss Tromans ![]() CCF inspiring the futureOur cadets have started 2024 working with high technology as they complete the iDEA (Inspiring Digital Enterprise) Award. This award is one of a range of nationally and internationally recognised qualifications on offer to our cadets. It aims to equip them with the digital skills needed to succeed in workplaces of the future. Once they have joined, cadets gain skills in a range of areas and opportunities. ![]() On Friday, 2nd February, our CCF held a quiz to raise funds for the CCF camp in the summer. This was a roaring success with many teams giving the quiz a good attempt. We had multiple teams who played the quiz and thoroughly enjoyed a good night out. Thank you to everyone who attended the quiz and donated money towards our CCF. We can confirm that over £300 was raised from the evening which will support all cadets going on camp. Thank you to the quiz master who did a fantastic job. ![]() Cadets is for all students in the Academy from Year 9 upwards.
