As we head into the summer, there are often more trip opportunities for our students to experience. This week, our Year 10 students went to the Hippodrome, and saw the play 'Blood Brothers', which they are studying in lesson – this was a great opportunity to enhance their learning. In addition, we visit our English and Religious Studies departments, who share the array of student experiences going on in these areas. Echoes of Resilience: Exploring Poetic DiversityOur Year 8 classes are weeks into their 'Diverse Voices' unit. During this unit, they have the chance to explore the work of various authors, public figures, and poets, and discuss the impact they have made on society. This week, students studied the poem 'Limbo' by Edward Kamau Braithwaite. ![]() Brathwaite uses the limbo dance to represent the journey of enslaved Africans on slave ships. The poem's rhythmic style captures their pain and strength during this dark time. The poem highlights the history and culture of the Caribbean, focusing on the painful experiences of enslaved Africans. It teaches us about the strength and resilience of people under extreme hardship. – Miss Russell ![]() Ethos Team Brings Easter to Life for Year 7The Ethos Team, a Christian organisation that work within the Academy, visited Year 7 Religious Studies lessons to discuss the meaning and significance behind the Christian festival of Easter. ![]() Students learnt about the key events of the Easter festival and discussed its significance for both believers and non-believers. Learning about Easter from a Christian point of view is in line with the curriculum where students have been learning about religious festivals. ![]() They worked hard and compared our curriculum work on religious festivals to the Ethos Team's lesson on Easter. They were able to make links between different festivals and other important meanings. – Ms Colley ![]() GCSE Students Thrilled by 'Blood Brothers' at Birmingham HippodromeOn Thursday 2nd May, GCSE Drama students visited the Birmingham Hippodrome to see the fantastic professional production of Blood Brothers. We study the text as part of the GCSE qualification and seeing the production on stage is a fantastic revision opportunity to see how professional theatre-makers have staged the musical. ![]() We have been looking at the historical context of the play in lessons, and one Year 10 student remarked "watching Blood Brothers has had a massive impact on how I view the 1980s, I had a preconception that it was all colourful and good music, but in fact there were many hardships and challenges the working class population had to endure". ![]() The production is emotionally hard hitting and one Year 10 student commented "Blood Brothers impacted me emotionally as the actors' characterisation made the characters feel like real people, so I could empathise". – Mrs Karim ![]() Mr Strachan Releases Zog's Inner Braveheart!Mr Strachan celebrated both his ancestry and his winning this week's ZAFTA by adorning Zog in some traditional Scottish garb. Mr Strachan's enthusiastic explanations secured the award and we look forward to seeing more of the same. – Mr Mills ![]() Upcoming Events
