Our Year 11 and 13 students are now deep into their respective exam seasons and as an Academy, we wanted to reiterate how proud we are of their efforts and attitude towards their examinations. We encourage them to work hard over the half term holiday, but to also ensure that they spend time relaxing to make sure they are ready for the final push when they return. Keep up the great work!

Proud of our Year 11 and Year 13 students

Our Year 11 and 13 students are now deep into their respective exam seasons and as an Academy, we wanted to reiterate how proud we are of their efforts and attitude towards their examinations. We encourage them to work hard over the half term holiday, but to also ensure that they spend time relaxing to make sure they are ready for the final push when they return. Keep up the great work!

This week we share what's been happening in Textiles and Science, we visit our knitting club, we discuss the fantastic efforts of our Year 9 and 10 girls football team, and we share what our Ethos Team have been up to. Lastly, we share the fantastic work our anti-bullying ambassadors have been doing.

We wish all students and their families a lovely half term break and look forward to welcoming students back for the final half term of the Academic year at the normal start time of 8:45am on Monday 3rd June.

Year 10 Visit the Sea Life Centre

Year 10 Textiles students have embarked on an exciting project centred around the theme of 'Ocean'. To inspire their primary imagery and artwork, we organised a trip to the National Sea Life Centre in Birmingham. This visit provided the students with a wealth of visual and sensory experiences to enrich their creative work.

Photos of fish

During the trip, students explored the diverse shapes, colours, and textures of aquatic animals. They captured photographs and created detailed observational drawings for inclusion in their portfolios. Additionally, they compiled insightful documentation reflecting on how the experience inspired their project work.

Exploring the Wonders of Space

Year 7 have been exploring the solar system, why we have seasons, and whether there is gravity in space. They have been linking their learning to the ever-increasing knowledge of space and where it could take us in the future.

Students eagerly experimented with different surfaces to see how they impact the size of craters formed by asteroids.

Stitch Your Way to New Skills and Friendship

Every Tuesday afternoon, room 307 transforms into a cosy hub of creativity and camaraderie from 3:15 to 4:15 pm. Whether you're a seasoned stitcher or a beginner, there is something for everyone. From the intricate art of latching, knitting, and cross-stitching bookmarks, to threading colourful yarns, there's plenty to learn and do.

Don't worry if you've never picked up a knitting needle or crochet hook before. The club is a fantastic place to start, with plenty of hands-on help and encouragement. We look forward to seeing new faces each week and returning ones too! Come and be a part of this welcoming group!

As a reminder – we have a huge range of extracurricular clubs and activities taking place every day, students are welcome to join as many of these as they like, for free. Click here to see the full timetable. – Mrs Noakes

Thrilling Football Journey for Year 9 and 10 Girls

On Wednesday morning a group of Year 9 and 10 girls took part in a prestigious tournament hosted by West Bromwich Albion Football Club at their training ground. It was attended by edcuational establishments from across the borough with the winners of each group moving forward to a national competition. Following a successful group stage in which the team won 2, drew 1 and lost 1, they progressed to the final against St Michael's.

Getting match ready

Sadly it wasn't to be our day; despite being in complete control for most of the match, we conceded a goal with just a couple of minutes to go and the team lost the final 1-0. Each and every player was brilliant, and we are very proud of them. Freya in Year 10 was voted as Player of the Tournament for Q3 Academy Great Barr, and a special mention is well-deserved for Lexie in Year 9 who scored her first goal during one of our victories. – Mr Webster

Year 8 Values Day

The Ethos Team have been busy this half term launching new and exciting events. They hosted a Values Day for Year 8 on 2nd May. Facilitators were invited to come and do different sessions throughout the day, covering topics such as respect, resilience, mental health, and being safe online. Year 8 enjoyed a variety of activities including a digital performance and a circus workshop! – Miss M Anderson

Students Unite Against Bullying with New Mural

In recent months, our anti-bullying ambassadors have been working towards their inclusion badge through The Diana Award Anti-Bullying scheme. They have been working hard all year at spreading the message of tolerance and respect for all. Last October they led assemblies for all Year Groups on the theme of Black History Month. They then went on to complete LGBTQ+ anti-bullying training led by Diana Award trainers.

And so it begins...

The latest way they have helped to spread their message is through designing and creating a mural on the third floor corridor which illustrates various protected characteristics such as religious beliefs, race, and sexuality. The students thoroughly enjoyed the creative process, and many staff and students have expressed their joy in seeing this message be visually celebrated on our Academy walls.

It's starting to come along!

The anti-bullying ambassadors have a few more ideas for how they can continue to spread their message ready for next half term including supporting with the Academy's Culture Week, and running a poster competition, so stay tuned for more exciting updates! – Miss B Smith

A bold and beautiful mural for all to see.
