A Theatrical Journey: Students Experience the Magic of 'Hamilton'

On Wednesday 3rd July, an air of excitement buzzed through the Performing Arts Department as 30 GCSE and A-Level Drama and Music students embarked on an unforgettable journey to the Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre. The destination? The award-winning musical phenomenon, 'Hamilton'.

As the coach made its way to the heart of Birmingham, the students' conversations were filled with anticipation and snippets of songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda's groundbreaking production. 'Hamilton', which has taken the world by storm with its innovative blend of hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and Broadway styles promised a cultural experience that none of our students could ever forget.

Students witnessed first-hand how the performing arts can blend history and modern storytelling to create something truly spectacular. The show's themes of ambition, legacy, and resilience resonated deeply, leaving the students with not only a greater appreciation for theatre, but also a renewed sense of inspiration for their own creative endeavours.

Reflecting on the day, one student remarked, "Seeing 'Hamilton' live was incredible. I'm going to go home now and blast the songs on repeat. I would definitely go and see it again and again and again." Another student quoting an iconic line from the show remarked "it was 'Awesome! WOW!" – Mrs Karim

Year 10s Explore Future Careers through Work Experience.

On 24th June, the students gained their first experience in the world of work by attending work placements. The students secured a range of impressive and diverse placements. These ranged from HMRC, the Council, Clayton Hotels, to pharmacies, retail, law firms, and SES Engineering Services, to name a few. We had great delight visiting and speaking with employers and students. The students mastered the art of commuting and embraced new skills, making the most out of their placements.

The food bank is an excellent place to not only help the community, but also gain work experience. The volunteers at Great Barr Foodbank were really impressed, especially with how hard the students worked, and how helpful they were.

A Week of Cultural Celebration

We had a fantastic week celebrating the diversity within our Academy. The Year 10 Student Voice Representatives organised a week packed with activities, designed to give students the opportunity to learn and celebrate our different cultures. On Tuesday, we asked students to share their favourite things about their culture and a live band played music from different cultures. Students also learnt about different languages, music, and food during Tutor Time. The Academy buzzed with excitement.

Cultural Catwalk

On Wednesday, students from Year 6 got to take part in a cultural jigsaw and tell us all about their culture. There were Wellbeing Inspire lessons, culminating in a task to create a display of cultural art. On Thursday, we had Britain vs America for 4th July with some seriously talented bands playing classics from Britain and the USA. They were so good the crowd demanded an encore. Lunchtimes were filled with a terrific atmosphere.

Gorgeous Cultural Dresses

Finally, on Friday we had a spectacular end to the week with a cultural feast, with favourite cultural food shared by our Academy community allowing students to get a taste of different cultures. The finale was a cultural catwalk with students and staff strutting their stuff in traditional cultural dress. An absolutely fantastic end to a week of celebration. Thank you to all the families who helped to make this week happen! – Mrs Rowe
