Unlocking the Joy of Reading

Our curriculum is designed to provide students with opportunities to engage with a diverse range of texts. Additionally, we encourage students to explore books outside the classroom that inspire their curiosity and interests.

Students can borrow books from both our Library and the Book Swap Shelf. We also have a suggestion box where they can recommend books or share topics that interest them, and we encourage them to contribute their ideas. At home, parents and carers can support by using the bookmarks provided. Spending just 15 minutes a day listening to your child read can really help them tackle more challenging texts.

At home, you can support your child by ensuring they complete their Sparx Reader each week. We ask that students complete their SRP allocation by 8 a.m. on Tuesdays to stay on track. Sparx Reader offers several helpful features, including a built-in dictionary and accessibility settings, which can enhance their reading experience – please encourage them to make use of these tools. If students encounter any issues or are unable to access Sparx Reader, they should speak to their Personal Tutor. – Miss Bull

Celebrating Achievements in GCSE Statistics

Over the past term, students have been covering a wide range of new and challenging content in their GCSE Statistics lessons. It has been wonderful to see how engaged and motivated they have been, rising to the challenge with enthusiasm and determination. Their commitment to understanding complex statistical concepts and applying them to real-world scenarios is truly commendable.

Recently, students completed a MiniTest designed to assess their grasp of the topics covered so far. This was an excellent opportunity for them to consolidate their learning and receive detailed feedback to guide their next steps. This feedback is an important tool for both students and parents/carers to track progress and ensure that everyone is clear on the next steps for continued success.

On another positive note, it was fantastic to see so many Year 9 students and their families at our recent Pathways Evening. It was particularly heartening to witness the keen interest many students showed in taking GCSE Statistics as one of their option choices. We are very much looking forward to welcoming another group of motivated and enthusiastic students to the course next year. – Mr Machin

Maths Challenge: Problem-Solving in Action

Some of our Year 9 and 10 students recently took part in the prestigious Intermediate Maths Challenge. This national competition gives students the opportunity to compete against their peers across the country, testing their problem-solving skills and mathematical abilities.

What sets this challenge apart from others is its unique format: unlike traditional exams, where every correct answer earns points, students may lose marks on certain questions if they make errors or guess incorrectly. This encourages them to think not only about the solutions, but also about their approach and the confidence behind their answers.

Our students were excited to get started, showing great enthusiasm and determination throughout the competition. As we eagerly await the results, we are proud of their commitment and the skills they demonstrated. The challenge is a fantastic way for our students to engage with mathematics in a new and exciting way, and we look forward to seeing how they've performed. – Miss Hopkins
