Our Head of Years (7 - 10)

Bringing Science to Life

Year 10 separate science students have dissected hearts to deepen their understanding of how the structure supports the function of the heart. Students showed great skill in their dissection, identifying the different chambers and blood vessels.

It was fantastic to see students so engaged with the dissection, linking the theory of blood circulation to the heart's vital structure. I am sure what they have learnt during this practical will help them understand how lifestyle factors can impact the heart in future lessons.

Our Year 13 chemists have been carrying out a required practical using thin-layer chromatography. During their practical, they analysed Anadin Extra to identify its components.

It was brilliant to see students applying the skills they have developed throughout their chemistry course to successfully complete the multi-step practical with precision and expertise. These hands-on skills are not just crucial for their course understanding but also for their upcoming exams and future scientific endeavours. – Miss L Smith

A-Level Sociologists Unlock the Secrets of Crime and Deviance

Last week, our A-Level Sociology students embarked on a visit to Shrewsbury Prison to better their understanding of the social distribution of crime and deviance by ethnicity, gender, and social class, on a tour led by Mick, an experienced HMP Officer.

We discussed recent and historic patterns and trends in crime, crime control, prevention and punishment, and the role of the criminal justice system amongst other agencies. Not only was this fascinating and fun, but it also gave our students first-hand experience to reflect on in preparation for their Crime and Deviance paper. – Mr Price

Interactive RS Lessons

Miss Anderson, our Ethos Leader, led some interactive Religious Studies lessons focusing on the topics of fear, rejection, and forgiveness. Students were able to choose which topic they wanted to explore. The lessons followed the stories of three young people navigating life and how faith can at times offer hope and strength. The lessons consisted of music, answering questions and watching informative videos of different experiences. – Ms Anderson

Discovering Town Planning

We were delighted to welcome Sandwell Council's Senior Town Planners, Aaran and Clinton, to share their career journey and inspire Year 11. Students were especially intrigued by the comparison between the graduate scheme, degree apprenticeship, and Master's degree pathways that the planners had completed. The captivating story of Q3 Academy Great Barr's beginnings had everyone hooked, offering a powerful insight into the importance of regeneration. – Mrs Meredith
